These events intend to strengthen conversations linked to growth drivers, business innovation, new technology and alternative revenue streams.

VMDO Links offers industry professionals a chance to connect with the presenters, as well as with their peers, aiming to develop and sustain key relationships.

VMDO Links - Neighbouring Rights w/ Susan Cotchin

On April 11th we'll be joined by Susan Cotchin of Good Neighbour as she tells us everything we need to know about the current state of Neighbouring Rights. With an annual global value estimated to be around $2.7bn, you'd think Neighbouring Rights would be a revenue stream everyone was over. And if it was, Susan Cotchin would have a lot more time on her hands. Instead, she has spent the last couple of decades tirelessly advocating both for a broader understanding within the industry and for changes at governmental level.

Come to Music Market and hear her in conversation on a number of issues, from how best to protect your rights and collect for you or your artist, to why Australians are missing out on millions compared to acts from other countries.

Following the discussion, you're welcome to hang around and we'll shout you a drink while you catch-up with your industry colleagues.

Date: Thursday April 11th

Time: Doors at 4.30pm with the event starting at 5pm sharp.

Place: Music Market Event Space, Collingward Yards (Find us HERE)

VMDO Links - The Inaugural MPEG Survey Report w/ Anna Laverty

A DISCUSSION ABOUT AUSTRALIA’S MUSIC PRODUCTION AND ENGINEERING LANDSCAPE AND OPPORTUNITIES WITH ANNA LAVERTY

On Wednesday, 30 Aug 2023, the Music Producer and Engineers’ Guild of Australia (MPEG) unveiled the results of its inaugural survey report that provides a comprehensive understanding of Australia’s music production, shedding light on the challenges and opportunities faced by the sector.

Established in 2022 by award-winning producer Anna Laverty, alongside foundation directors Cath Haridy & Tom Larkin, MPEG now boasts over 300 members who have worked with some of the world’s most successful artists.

The survey results found that financial stress and self-employed, unregulated working conditions contributed to poor mental health among 19.8% of respondents who are highly skilled producers and engineers.

In May 2023, VMDO supported Anna Laverty to attend The Great Escape festival in the UK, where Anna connected with many international opportunities and delivered a panel discussion on “Building Community to Create Stronger Networks” in partnership with Sounds Australia.

Watch the video to hear from Anna Laverty and MPEG members, who unpack the report further and explore opportunities available to producers and engineers who would love to forge a pathway into the international market.

"We hope to use the information in this report to help support and create opportunities for our members to aim higher and achieve more in their careers. We can now also see the massive gaps in our community and hope to nurture new talent into the space. This report will help individual producers and engineers realise that they are not alone in their feelings and experiences and will encourage them to discuss them more freely," Anna Laverty shares.

Date: Thursday 28 Sep, 2023

Location: Music Market

What’s Metadata got to do with me?

Do you know what an ISRC is? Do you know how metadata relates to making money from your music? Do you know the difference between a publisher, a distributor, an aggregator and a digital service provider? Did you know that every year $US2.5 billion is not paid out to artists and rights holders due to inaccurate and incomplete metadata?

Many in the music industry answer no to some, if not all, of these questions. A place full of confusion, opaque practices, and inconsistent language.

As an artist, then a record label owner and now a technology company with Envoke Network, Merida Sussex has always tried to reconnect and re-engage artists with their music and their music business, and one of the direct ways to do this is re-connecting artists to their metadata, as artists are the source of information about their music.

Over the pandemic, Prof Ellie Rennie (RMIT University) and Merida have interviewed artists, labels, publishers and managers all over the world about their processes of creating and communicating metadata. This research and subsequent development was partly funded by the ARC Cooperation through Code research project, the Australia Council, and the VMDO.

At our next VMDO Links session, Ellie and Merida will discuss some of their findings and some of the practical tools and practices people can do to ensure that their metadata is accurate and complete. They will also be joined by one of the artist's they interviewed - N'fa Forster-Jones.

Make Your Skills Count

Have you ever considered how many different skills you’ve picked up while working in the music industry, yet don't have the credentials to show for it?

We understand that there are highly skilled people working in the Victorian contemporary music community who may not recognise the significance of their experience acquired throughout their professional working lives.

CLOCK is an international organisation providing learning and professional development programs designed to help everyone, regardless of background, recognise and accredit skills needed to work in different roles across the Creative Industries.

For the next instalment of VMDO Links, join us for a panel discussion with international guests Denise Stanley, Michelle Escoffery, Claudia Matera and Ximo Peris from CLOCK, in conversation with N’fa Forster Jones, artist and lecturer at Box Hill Institute. The team will be sharing more info about their work and mission to make invisible skills visible and valued.

Music Export in 2022

International touring has well and truly restarted after COVID-19 forced everyone to pause. But the world looks very different to what it did pre-pandemic. So how should you approach music export in 2022?

For 13 years, Sounds Australia has been supporting Australian artists and music businesses to bolster their international activity, creating showcasing and networking events at festivals globally and putting our artists in front of the world’s top-tier music industry, as well as working behind-the-scenes back home to advocate for the interests of Australian music export.

The VMDO are partnering with Sounds Australia to present you with a week-long program, 'Music Export in 2022', which consists of an in-person VMDO Links networking event, followed by one-on-one meeting opportunities with a Sounds Australia export expert.

At the VMDO Links - Music Export in 2022 event, you’ll connect with Sounds Australia’s Esti Zilber, Millie Millgate and Dom Alessio in person and hear about what the international export landscape looks like right now. The popularity of Australian music continues to grow globally, but with the rising cost of living, supply chain shortages and backlogs at embassies and consulates around the world, find out how can you be best prepared for any overseas activity you might be planning.

If you’re looking to play internationally for the first time, or you’re restarting your export activity, this is the session for you.

MUS3 Mixer

Blockchain technology has impacted almost every industry in the world. None more so than the music industry. From NFT ticketing, tokenised fan clubs, to fractionalised ownership of royalties, blockchain and Web3 platforms are disrupting how music can be created, owned and distributed.

MUS3 is a new educational initiative between VMDO and Reggie Ba-Pe from CLUB MEDIA, funded by Creative Victoria with additional support from Australia Council for the Arts, to share knowledge and introduce Web3 concepts to the music industry.

To kick things off, we’d like to invite the Victorian music industry to gather and discuss all things music and Web3 at our next VMDO Links networking event – MUS3 Mixer.

This is a casual meetup open to everyone interested in exploring the convergence of blockchain and music.

Whether you are a musician, manager, lawyer, graphic designer, label manager, publisher, filmmaker, developer, student or entrepreneur, this is the perfect opportunity to find and connect with like-minded people who share your vision and curiosity about Web3 in music. You’ll get to hear about the forthcoming MUS3 program and join our dedicated Music Web3 community in Victoria!

Music Market will open its doors at 5pm on Wednesday 22nd June. There will be free drinks, snacks, music and NFTs on display from Victorian artists. Bring your friends and prepare for some fun and inspiring conversations!

What comes to mind when you think of music merchandise? In the modern day, we've come a long way from the trusty black t-shirt (and yet it remains a staple). Now that touring has returned, how can the artist (and their team) balance traditional sale opportunities while serving a market well beyond the merch desk? Join us for a panel discussion with Jack Dowling McDonald (Sound Merch), Paige X. Cho (Bolster) and Ashleigh Hills (UNIFIED) as we examine how the market has changed, crunch the numbers and discuss the opportunities for merch in 2022.

Modern Day Music Careers

Presented by the Victorian Music Development Office
Wednesday 9th March, 4pm - 6pm AEDT

In 2022 what does it mean to navigate a modern day music career?

We already know that the artist's career involves so much more than recording and touring. With a vast amount of alternative revenue streams at the artists finger tips, what areas are worthy of their attention? From sponsorships, sync licensing, songwriting and side hustles, the opportunities appear to be endless, but navigating them requires a clear road map and strategic thinking.

Additionally, increased opportunities brings new challenges. Artists (and their teams) are being asked to do more than ever before, so how can we cultivate a supportive environment and manage the risk of burn out?

Leading the discussion is music strategist Amber Horsburgh. She'll be joined by Ben Dennis (Myriad Management) and artists Beatrice and Jade Empress. We'll take a deep dive into what alternative revenue streams are grabbing their attention and discuss what a sustainable music career looks like.

Moderator: Amber Horsburgh
Amber Horsburgh is the founder of Deep Cuts, an online course that teaches independent musicians how to get their music heard by millions using major label strategies.

She has spent the last decade working in NY and LA as SVP of Strategy helping to build marketing strategies for artists. Her current and previous clients include Mura Masa, Smino, Chet Faker, Miike Snow & Cold War Kids, YouTube Music, Spotify, SoundCloud, Sonos, and Google Play.

Her debut single Golden Hours, released February 3rd, presents an ode to commitment-phobia where the primary goal is not to run away, but to chase an endless sunset. In its first week of release, it received airplay on Triple J, Double J, multiple community stations, and has been added to rotation on multiple commercial stations throughout Australia.

Top Music Industry Trends of 2021

Presented by the Victorian Music Development Office and Music Ally
Wednesday 10th November, 5pm - 6.30pm AEDT

Music Ally has spent 2021 covering a blizzard of music business news: market data, deals, new startups and (sometimes!) heated rows about what it all means for the future of this industry.

In this session, we'll be joined by Stuart Dredge, Head of Insight at Music Ally (UK) who will be taking a step back to talk about the bigger picture in some of the key trends. Streaming's growth and the artist activism that goes with it, for example, or the excitement around high-potential markets like China, India and Africa.

In this session we'll also explore how livestreaming is evolving; TikTok and the wider short-video space; what the podcasts and live audio boom means for artists and labels; and music creation for non-musicians.

Plus, we'll dig below the hype around the metaverse and NFTs to offer our views on what potential these technologies *really* have for the music industry. The session will focus on our observations, questions and predictions on these trends, as well as some recommendations for how you can explore them yourself in the coming months.

Presenter: Stuart Dredge

Alternative Platforms for Music Marketing

Presented by the Victorian Music Development Office and Music Ally
Wednesday 13th October, 5pm - 6.30pm AEDT

Platforms like Instagram, Facebook and TikTok are used in virtually every artist marketing campaign – but to unlock international or niche audiences, you’ll need to engage with platforms that you may never have used before.

It’s clear that managers and marketers with global ambitions or who understand the need to engage authentically with fans need to know how to use a wider range of platforms than ever – and understand local user expectations.

For example – to capitalise on the viral power of short-form video in a rapidly-growing market like India, you’ll need to get to grips with Moj, not TikTok, and to build a fanbase in Russia, artists need to grow a genuine presence on VKontakte and Yandex.

In this session, Music Ally will teach you everything you need to know to start leveraging some of the most important, non-traditional, digital platforms in your artist marketing campaigns. We’ll explain how to engage correctly with unfamiliar – but huge – apps, platforms and audiences. We’ll also answer some of the trickier questions about important burgeoning platforms: how do you build authentic and bustling communities on Discord, a platform ready for its “mainstream moment”; and, as streaming service Audiomack continues to grow rapidly, how can artists be discovered?

Presenter: Marlen Huellbrock
Marlen has been working at Music Ally since 2019 and now heads up their Marketing Services department, supporting management and label clients in all things digital marketing. She's also part of Music Ally's Training team, where she develops and delivers digital marketing training to a wide range of industry clients.

Before joining Music Ally, Marlen worked within Universal Music's brand partnerships team in Germany and Switzerland and completed an MA in Music Business Management at the University of Westminster.
